Denzel and I shared the same air.

Just because I’m in “deadline hell” doesn’t mean I can’t stop for a blog break, right?

OK, let me start by saying that I’m not a groupie (really, I’m not!), but what’s the point of having a blog if you can’t share the news that you were in a room with Denzel Washington? Sure, it was for a press conference and I was among a roomful of fellow journalists, but the fact remains that he and I were breathing the same oxygen. That has to count for something.

Last Saturday was the press junket for The Great Debaters where I chatted up Jurnee Smollett and Nate Parker, but prior to the one-on-ones and roundtables, there was a press conference with Denzel and the film’s young cast. It’s so progressive to watch as he segues into directing while ushering in the next generation of talent. It’s all cyclical, right? The movie is a must-see, especially for the young’ns. Can’t wait to read his (and Oprah’s) Ebony cover story.

Oh, and one more thing…is it just me, or are you gagged about Michael Vick’s sentencing? For the record, I am completely in the dark about most things related to sports and honestly, I didn’t really know who he was before these charges (please don’t tell anyone). I adore my canine friends, but 23 months -18, with good behavior – is quite a sobering sentence for dog-fighting. Perhaps a hefty fine and lots of community service could have done the trick, but it looks like he’s going to be penniless and without a career once it’s all said and done. I know he wants to kick himself for this one.

Before I get back to work, perhaps I’ll address a few Christmas cards. I really wish I could get paid for procrastinating.

Duty calls…will be back later.
