Alicia Keys performed, fabulously, wearing a killer dress and a pair of gold, shoulder-grazing earrings that I really wanted to swipe from her dressing room. Fantasia belted out a selection from The Color Purple soundtrack, but because I try to respect everybody’s artistic expression, I will refrain from commenting on her new two-toned, blonde/black, left-shaved mohawk’d bob of a hairstyle. Speaking of hair, Theola, J Records’ VP of Publicity, switched up her ‘do and was sporting flowing locs. We christened her “with hair” alter ego, Cleo, which she happily responded to, with laughter. My good friend, Carolyn, J’s Marketing VP, who, along with Theola/Cleo, got a shout-out during Alicia’s acceptance speech the next day, rocked out to the Foo Fighters’ set and British import, Leona Lewis, sang quite beautifully. Then there was Akon and Wyclef…let’s just say, they went on and on, and on again.

I’ve been entertaining and burning my candle on both ends, so by Sunday night, I was “napping” by 8pm. Didn’t wake up ’til 2am, at which point I fast-forwarded through most of the Grammys to watch Alicia nab a trophy, Prince strut out in his red suit (does he not look amazing and still, so sexy?), Kanye pay homage to his mom and of course, Beyonce’ and Ms. Tina do their thing. Did I mention that Tina Turner and I share a birthday? When I found that out, I knew that I was capable of anything.

Today, am on the North Carolina set of The Secret Life of Bees, which I’m rather thrilled about. Have been following the progress of this production for about a year now and just finished the book last night. Gina Prince-Bythewood, of Love & Basketball fame, is directing and the film stars Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo, Alicia, Nate Parker, Tristan Wilds (one of my favorite up-and-comers, check out page 177 of Essence’s March issue) and little Dakota Fanning, in the lead role. I love the magic of film, but making one is a long process of start-and-stop, hurry-up-and-wait. I can hardly wait to see this one on the big screen.

Am trying to do a bit of work, type this blog and stay up on what’s going on between takes. For those of you who’ve read the book, I’m sitting in the Boatwright sister’s “pink house” which is set up with two monitors. Happily, I can see the sun emerging through the curtains, which means that everything is right with the world.

Um, and can we talk about Barack? He is doing big things, for sure. It’s so unbelievable and fabulous…sometimes I feel like we’re all watching history unfold, in slow motion.
