As I was making my usual rounds to find a sexy parking spot, I eyed one across the street. For the record, I’m all about free street parking, after 6pm, so I thought I was in luck.

I’ll admit that I’m not 100% opposed to quick, illegal maneuvers as long you’re clear of pedestrians and other drivers. So, after taking a look around, I saw that I was good. Or so I thought.

As soon as I maneuvered my steering wheel to make my across-the-double line U-Turn (which actually turned into a cumbersome, 3-point situation), I saw the cop car. It was too late to turn back. For a second I thought I was safe because the cop behind the wheel didn’t see me, but then I saw his partner turn his head, right in my direction.

Damn.

Damn.

Damn.

Yes, I was wrong – very wrong – and quite pissed at myself. Before I even heard the words, “You know that was an illegal U-Turn you made,” I started pulling out my license, registration and insurance info, meanwhile calculating how much damage I’d done to the checking account – moving violation, traffic school, points on my license, higher Geico payments? [sigh] I was still doing the math when the officer checked my VIN info and tags…then he said, “You know that’s $104 for making that turn in a business district, right? Be more careful.” I think I said something to the effect of, “Really, officer? I’m so sorry about that,” but I was totally in a daze. Let’s just say that I didn’t realize he’d let me off the hook until I saw him make an illegal U-Turn going in the opposite direction.

My record for moving violations is very slim, but I’ve never slid my way out of a ticket before. Never. Maybe the officer took pity on me because I looked like a deer in headlights or maybe he was feeling soft about the gas prices and the recession. Who knows? I’m not questioning his motives, but I definitely learned my lesson and promise to be on my best behavior.

Oh, and as an added bonus, I still got that parking spot!

OK, I must give a shout out to the universe for watching over me.
