I’m still loving you, Marvin…

Remember that late-night scene from Love & Basketball when Quincy finds his mother crying by the pool? If I recall correctly, his words to her were, “What’s wrong, Momma? That last time I saw you drink was the day that Marvin Gaye died.”

Like many of you, I remember that day well. It was April Fool’s Day and I was just hoping and praying that the reports of his untimely death were some cruel, cruel joke. The more I prayed, the more I realized that it was true. I was crushed. Still am.

So, although his birthday is tomorrow, I always think of Marvin on this day. After a months-long search for my I Want You CD (yes, I said CD!), I finally broke down and replaced it a few weeks back. I will be blasting it for the rest of the day.

Here’s a piece I wrote on My Dear, Mr. Gaye last year around this time. I’m still loving him, for sure, and I hope he’s resting easy.
