I can’t front. Writing cover stories, with nearly-impossible deadlines, is a stressful situation – always.  It’s challenging and frustrating and, at times, physically-painful (no lie), but all of those feelings seem to fly out the window when you see your issue on newsstands. The first thought that usually comes to mind is, “Oh my God, I really did get it done…and I survived…and it’s fabulous!”

All that said, I had the pleasure of penning LL Cool J’s first ESSENCE cover story (March 2013) and it was amazing to learn that he was genuinely excited about reaching such a milestone.  He said that his mother was proud, too, which I thought was really sweet.  Dude has been putting in work for 30 years and even now, he’s got a lot going on – from hosting the Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 10th, to dropping a new album the following Tuesday and of course, his day job on NCIS: Los Angeles.  We talked about work and life and family and such, but what really struck me is when he said, “You can’t make moves based on fear if you want to succeed in your life.”  No simpler or truer words have ever been spoken.

Okay, I don’t want to give too much away, so if you would kindly find your way to your closest newsstand to pick up a copy (I bought one, too!), I’d be most appreciative.  And feel free to let me know what you think.

Oh, and one more thing – Happy February (can you believe that it’s February already?).
